The year 2017 has been a busy and exciting year for Denmark’s largest supply company, HOFOR (Hovedstadens Forsyningsselskab/the capital’s supply company) – where isoplus Fjernvarmeteknik A/S is the pipe supplier. The enormous subway construction work, which is turning Copenhagen upside down these years, has been one of the capital’s many challenges – e.g. in the South Harbour.
- A subway station is to be constructed at Enghave Brygge, precisely in the location of our district heating pipeline. Therefore we have had to move four Ø 160 mm pipes (each about 400 metres) to another location, says engineer and construction manager Henrik Pyndt Sørensen, HOFOR.
The construction work started in the autumn of 2016 and was completed this summer. Once the subway is finalized, the second stage of the restructuring can begin, says Henrik Pyndt Sørensen.
From steam to water
The project is in contrast to another huge project, which HOFOR is occupied with - the shift from steam to hot water. About one third of the all district heating in Copenhagen is currently being produced as steam, but they could gain great energy and environmental advantages from shifting the network to hot water.
Especially in the inner city, where the work is carried out.
- Narrow streets, heavy traffic, consideration for the local residents, business owners, etc. mean very difficult conditions. We plan to have the shift completed in 2021, says the construction manager. Not only do we talk of a new pipe system, but hundreds of heating stations have to be converted, too. We do this at a rate of about 100 stations per year.
We deliver what is needed
According to the construction manager, isoplus is a good and competent partner regarding the many large and small projects – also when specially made steel-in-steel pipes were needed for a particular project. All in all, 2 x 1,400 metres of Ø 508/610 mm pipes were installed at a depth of 42 m below ground in the area between Fredens Park and Adelgade.
- The pipes had to be run into a tunnel on small rollers. Here, the steel jacket pipe was extremely resistant to the pressure from these rollers, he says.
- We are happy to work with isoplus. They deliver whatever we need; they are flexible and reliable so in our opinion our cooperation is very smooth, Henrik Pyndt Sørensen emphasizes.
